A rural delivery business involves the sorting and delivering of mail and the delivery of other items to a number of people on a set route established by Rural Post.
It generally includes some or all of the following;
Delivery of mail, parcels, unaddressed mail (circulars), newspapers etc under contract to NZ Post.
The sale of NZ Post products (stamps, courier packs etc).
Delivery of newspapers for the publishers.
Delivery of unaddressed mail for other businesses.
Delivery of parcels and courier items for other businesses.
The carriage of freight and any other items that the contractor wishes or that the people on the route request.
The income for Rural Delivery business is derived from the following:
Rural Post - A payment based on an established benchmark for the cost of the vehicle used and an agreed time taken over the route, plus a piece rate payment for unaddressed mail, parcels and Courier Post items.
A payment from other businesses using the services of the contractor
Charges to customers for goods or services provided (milk, bread parcels etc)
All rural delivery businesses are different in that the daily distance can vary from 50km to 300km and the number of customers can vary from 50 to 1400.
